RAPID CITY, S.D, (KOTA TV)- To celebrate the arts, several poets battled it out with poetry at the Rushmore Civic Center.
Several poets competed in a few rounds of poetry slams at the Lakota Nation Invitational. But one poet was ready to pull out a special poem the poet wrote last year in December. 17-year old poet, Lane, talked about the sorrow of murdered indigenous women ... a sensitive topic that the poet wanted more people to recognize.
"We need to talk about it and we need to recognize how many indigenous women are being murdered and kidnapped and how many families are suffering because of this," says Lane.
Lane says he appreciates this event for giving students the ability to express themselves through spoken word.
The Lakota Nation Invitational will continue to host a variety of events til Saturday.
