RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) - Around 3:30 p.m., a 20" water main broke near downtown between East Boulevard and 1st Street disrupting traffic at the intersection of St.Joe Street and East Boulevard.
Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes in the area so crews can make a fix and clean up the debris in area. Water service is disrupted for those in the three-block area on Quincy Street from East Boulevard to Second Street.
One witness said that the water went up as far as 3' high where it broke just before the tail end of his car.
"This guy says it's flooding out here so I looked out and that water was just high," said M.J. Cook who is visiting his daughter from out-of-town. "It was running through here and around the house and on this side and all the way down. It was about 3' coming out of there. It was gushing and probably about a foot through here and if you looked out the back window it was a river back there."
At this point, it is undetermined how many homes are actually affected with disrupted water service or how long traffic will be disrupted in the area.
