Meade County program puts veterans to work

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) - There are an estimated 850,000 unemployed veterans in the U.S. Firewise, a Community Wildfire Protection Plan in Meade County, is a program that helps bring this number down.

Meade County's "Veteran in the Woods" initiative hires and trains veterans to work with landowners on the education and implementation of fire fuel mitigation efforts.

Firewise offers short-term ( four to six months) employment. The end goal is to see these veterans find full-time employment in a career field of their choice.

The initiative provides an opportunity for servicemen and women to find purpose in helping their community. It is funded by the Bureau of Land Management and community donations.

For more information on how to get involved contact the human resources office for Meade County at 605-720-1625 and visit their website, meadecounty.org/firewise.
