The Salvation Army is hoping to brighten the holidays for area families

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) - The Salvation Army is gearing up to brighten the lives of families this holiday season.

Currently they are now accepting applications for their annual Christmas Food and Toy Shop events.

Those that apply can get enough food such as turkey and stuffing to make a nice Christmas meal and get some gifts for their children. The food and toys will be distributed December 18-22. Applicants must provide proof of residence, income, age of children, an ID for everyone in the residence and a valid picture I-D for the head of household.

"Well we don't want Christmas to be something they look at as a burden and it should be a time where families are celebrating and coming together and a lot of families just don't have a lot of funds to purchase gifts for their kids or purchase a big meal at Christmas," said Capt. Michelle Johnson with the Salvation Army. "So we want to take that pressure off of them and help to let them focus on the good things of the holidays."

The Salvation Army is looking for toy donations, you can find an Angel Tree Tag a various businesses that will have an age and gender on them.They are desperately in need of toys for boys and girls ages 10-12. They are also looking for board game donations.

If you are in the Northern Hills, Meade, Butte and Lawrence Counties, from now until Nov. 2nd, you can apply at the Salvation Army Thrift Store in Spearfish.

If you're in the Rapid City, Box Elder, Fall River County or Black hawk, you can apply at The Salvation Army Corps Nov. 5-16, Monday through Friday.
