RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) - Runnings in Rapid City just finished its annual chick days sale. More than 2,500 chicks went out the door last weekend, and there's still hundreds for sale at Runnings Rapid City.
While this time of year might seem like a good time to buy a chick for that perfect family photo, it's not what these animals are for.
They are intended for ranches, not as pets.
Running's agriculture manager said it's important to remember every chick isn't the same and some produce more eggs than others.
Here are some important tips to remember once you bring a chick home:
- Babies can't be put directly in the backyard, instead, it needs to be set under a warm temperature light inside.
If you have more than 6 chicks, you'll need more than one feeder and watering system.
Once the chick makes it outdoors, protect it from predators by determining which animals could prey on it.
Most importantly check your city ordinance, example Rapid City doesn't allow residents to own the bird while hot springs do.
