South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks announces upcoming hunting seasons

PIERRE, S.D. (KOTA TV) - Hunting seasons for several different types of game have been set for the 2018 season. The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission made the announcement for Pheasant, Elk and West River Deer Hunting Seasons.

No changes were made to the Youth, Resident Only and Traditional hunting seasons. The seasons will run as follows:

Youth Pheasant
• October 6-10, 2018
• October 5-9, 2019
• October 3-7, 2020

Resident Pheasant
• October 13-15, 2018
• October 12-14, 2019
• October 10-12, 2020

Traditional Pheasant
• October 20, 2018 – January 6, 2019
• October 19, 2019 – January 5, 2020
• October 17, 2020 – January 3, 2021

Elk Hunting
Archery elk hunting seasons for 2018 and 2019 will take place in September each year. A total 222 licenses will be available. The Black Hills Elk hunting seasons have 425 any elk licenses and 700 antlerless elk licenses available. Prairie Elk seasons will have 68 any elk and 73 antlerless elk licenses and Harding County has been added to the season.

Nine any elk licenses are available for hunters wanting to firearm hunt at Custer State Park during October.

Proposed changes to the West River deer hunting season would issue days where only antlerless licenses are valid during season in 2018.

The dates of the proposed season are as follows:
• Unit 30A (Gregory): Nov. 3-6, 19-25, 2018
• Other Units: Nov. 10-25, 2018
• Antlerless Deer Tags: Dec. 6-16, 2018

The public is invited to weigh in on the proposed changes. A hearing will be held May 3, at 2 p.m. at Creekside Lodge in Custer State Park. Written comments can also be submitted to 523 E. Capitol Ave., Pierre, SD 57501.
