Salvation Army needs bell ringers

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) - The Salvation Army helps the surrounding community year-round and this time of year they need your help.

They are looking for bell ringing volunteers to help in their annual red kettle holiday collection.

They say their bell ringers are the difference between an empty kettle and one that raises about $30 per hour, which is enough to provide a family with two bags of groceries, or shelter an individual for a night.

Last year, the Salvation Army in the Black Hills said they raised nearly $300,000. Ninety percent of which stayed in the area to help those in need.

No only do volunteers help raise this money, but they also help raise that holiday spirit.

"It just brings the Christmas spirit and people always ask us where our bell ringers are going to be or our daily bell ringers get asked where will you be tomorrow, so it brings a lot of joy to the community," said Lt. Chrystal Sherack of the Salvation Army.

Volunteers are expected to sign up for at least a two-hour shift. Anyone interested can call 791-4046 and ask for Lt. Sherack.
