5 injured in serious crash following chase
Five people were injured when a car involved in a short police chase crashed in Rapid Valley Thursday morning.
According to a release from the Rapid City Police Department, the incident began when “law enforcement received information about a drug transaction involving a suspect vehicle. Additional information provided to law enforcement indicated that the occupants were armed.”
Pennington County Sheriff’s Office deputies tried to stop the vehicle in the area of Highway 44 and Teewinot Drive but the driver sped off. The pursuit, according to the police lasted about two minutes before the car crashed into a pickup after running the stop sign at the Jolly Lane and Twilight Drive intersection.
All four people in the suspect vehicle as well as the driver of a pickup that was hit were taken to the hospital; some of them reportedly in critical condition.
The RCPD critical accident reconstruction team is investigating the crash.
There was a serious crash at the intersection of Twilight Drive and Jolly Lane Thursday around 9:40 a.m.
Reportedly the crash happened during a high-speed chase with police. Several witnesses say the car crashed into a utility truck and then was surrounded by police with guns drawn.
We do not know how many people were in the car or the extent of injuries.
Lt. Dustin Morrison of the Pennington County Sheriff's Office said a deputy was trying to stop a suspect vehicle before it crashed into the truck. Because the sheriff's office was involved in the incident, the investigation has been turned over to the Rapid City Police Department.
