Local embezzlement case ends

CUSTER, S.D. (KOTA TV) - The SunCatcher Therapeutic Riding embezzlement case has finally come to a close.

Tiffany Thovson and Jerry Smedshammer were sentenced Thursday in Custer.

The 25-year-old Thovson and 75-year-old Smedshammer each pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit theft. Both were sentenced to three years of probation. They will have to make full restitution of the $14,641 they stole, as well as serve at least 10 days in jail.

Dating back to at least 2012, Thovson and Smedshammer were creating fake people and paper trails to defraud the horseback riding non-profit for people with disabilities.

"The silver lining in all of this is because of what happened here we have a strong series of checks and balances in our own finances to make sure nothing like this ever happens again," said SunCatcher president Tim Pederson.

This case had been going on for over three years.
