RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) - John Sutherland, 20, was arrested Sunday night after not one but two pursuits that lasted nearly an hour total.
Sutherland was charged with aggravated eluding, leaving the scene of an accident, obstruction, theft of a motor vehicle, reckless driving, and driving without a valid license.
At 9 p.m. Sunday, police observed a Chevy HHR speeding on East.Saint Patrick Street. Police attempted a traffic stop, but the HHR continued to speed from Saint Patrick Street to Campbell Street. Once the HHR passed Campbell Street, police ended the pursuit for safety reasons.
Shortly after the pursuit ended, police received a report of a stolen vehicle that matched the description of the HHR.
Around 9:50 p.m., police located the suspect in the area of Kansas City Street and East Boulevard. Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but failed. The driver eventually pulled into a parking lot and turned off the lights. Then, the driver attempted to strike a police car, but missed and struck a snow bank. While this was happening, police laid out spike strips along East Chicago Street. The driver circled the parking lot, parked the vehicle briefly, then drove onto Chicago Street, driving over the spike strips.
The HHR then struck a vehicle parked along Pine Street and continued until reaching the end of the street. The suspect, later identified as Sutherland, tried to run away. A K-9 officer commanded the suspect to stop running, but Sutherland did not comply. This was when the K-9 was sent after Sutherland, ending with a bite, allowing police to take Sutherland into custody.
