Lawrence County State's Attorney John Fitzgerald wants to be South Dakota's top cop.
Fitzgerald said on Thursday he will seek the Republican nomination for Attorney General in 2018.
In a news release, Fitzgerald says a priority is to fight the surge in dangerous drugs with an aggressive and coordinated team approach. He says prison sentences are a strong deterrent to crime.
Between Butte and Lawrence Counties, Fitzgerald has been a State's Attorney since 1980.
Current Attorney General Marty Jackley is running for Governor.
