Symphony hits the right notes with young audience

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) - The Black Hills Symphony concert treats fourth graders to a special show, just for them.

During the school year the students learn about the various instruments used in a symphony. Brass, wind and string instruments on full display.

This concert is a 40-year tradition for students. The short performance includes music from The Sound of Music, The Wizard of Oz, and Superman.

Teachers tell us, for some of these students, this is the first time they've seen live music in person.

"It's one of the highlights of the year for the fourth graders and for the music teachers as well because it's a chance to really highlight making music live," says Christine Leichtnam, the elementary music coordinator with Rapid City Area Schools.

Black Hills Energy pays for the students to be bused to the civic center, every year.
