FORT MEADE, S.D. (KOTA TV) - People at the 2018 Veterans Creative Art Show at Fort Meade were treated to a variety of art types. The show features works in the categories of visual arts, performance arts and creative writing.
This is the 12th year Fort Meade has been part of this competition. The purpose of the competition is to recognize the therapeutic benefits of the arts and how they help veterans cope with emotional and physical trauma.
“The therapeutic part about art and helping veterans is, it takes their minds off their problems they might have,” said Dennis Linn, a fine artist and United States Air Force veteran. “When you’re involved and you’re engaged in drawing or painting, your mind is somewhere else. You’re in a different world and the arts help you to become calmer…it just helps.”
This year, 32 pieces of art were submitted to the competition. Select winners will be invited to compete at the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival. The Hot Springs VA will host their competition on March 14.
