RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) - March 1 has become an unofficial holiday for ice cream lovers in Rapid City, opening day for Armadillo’s Ice Cream Shoppe.
After more than two decades in a rather small building on the 200 block of Main Street, Armadillo’s moved across to the 100 block to better accommodate the large crowds that flock there each spring and summer.
Co-owner Austin Brummer says that they try every year to come up with new ways to bring in new customers as well as satisfy the regulars.
“We've got a couple new items this year,” Brummer said. “We've got our Capri and Cuban sandwiches; we've also got a couple new ice cream items which are the Roly Poly and the Maple Bacon Shake or Malt, both are just fantastic.”
Armadillo’s doesn’t just stick with the tried-and-true; always cooking up new tastes.
“We've also got our chemist in the lab and he's working on a couple new flavors, but I’m not going to let the cat out of the bag just yet,” Brummer said. “We might see some new flavors this year for our sherbet.”
Still, the shop will stick with tradition for the opening flavor. Through Sunday, it is strawberry butter.
