Food Truck Friday: Smokin' Hot

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) - Last week, we found out a new twist on a Mexican classic with The Green Chili Shack, but today, we hope you're in the mood for some tasty barbecue. This week's Food Truck Friday spotlight is smokin' hot - literally.

It's been almost three years since Smokin' Hot debuted in the Black Hills.

"We started our food truck because we didn't like the food prices of the brick and mortar restaurants, and we didn't really want to be at our business 24/7 every day," Smokin' Hot Owner Kaylie Sterud said. "We wanted to have something mobile so we could cater on site, have the ambiance of the smoke all day fill the air and then serve the barbecue meal in the evening."

Family reunions and housewarming parties pushed the Smokin' Hot owners into the food truck business.

"It was a request for a wedding that really put us on a halt and we just dove right into business. We just started small and had requests, so it grew and grew and now we have this," Sterud said.

The biggest hit for everyone that visits the food truck includes all sorts of barbecue staples.

"It is a random creation that my husband came up with Rally of 2016. It is our barbecue nachos that are our number one seller," Sterud said. "They've got a little bit of pulled pork, chopped brisket, some of our signature coleslaw, two of our signature barbecue sauces - a white barbecue sauce and a red - all topped on some chips and some fresh melted cheese."

There is one twist that many people don't know about the food truck: everything the couple makes is gluten-free.

The people around the Black Hills aren't the only enjoyable aspect about having a food truck.

"We've partnered with several different businesses to set up. Lost Cabin - they're like family to us. We started food trucking here as soon as they opened their doors and its just a community of love for small businesses, really enjoy it here," Sterud said.

If you're in the mood to try some of their ever-changing sides, you can find all the information you need on their Facebook page located to the right of the article.
