UPDATE: As of Tuesday morning, the Legion Lake Fire remains at approximately 2,500 acres and zero percent containment.

Crews will be mapping the fire today.

On Monday morning, a wildlife forced evacuations from several homes along with the closure of Custer State Park.

Legion Lake Fire has grown to a type 2 fire and is more than 2,500 acres and is zero percent contained.

The fire is human caused, but is currently under investigation. Five homes in Custer State Park Area have been evacuated.

According to Custer State Park, fire officials were called around 7:30 Monday morning to Wilson Corner near the Legion Lake Lodge in Custer State Park.

There are currently 200 firefighters on the fire ranging from Custer to Pennington and Fall River counties, but more hand crews are ordered. There is also an order for helicopters and heavy tankers.

Crews are expected to be on scene throughout the week. The wind is making it difficult for crews to put out.

Roads near Devil’s Triangle, including sections of Highways 16A and 87 are closed.

Also, the Bug Fire, burning six miles north of Custer, has grown to about 12.5 acres.

Both fires are reportedly human caused but specific details have not been released.

Firefighters are on the 30-acre Legion Lake Fire burning in Custer State Park near Legion Lake Lodge.

South Dakota Wildland Fire and Black Hills National Forest crews are already on scene and the Rapid City Fire Department is sending an engine and crew to assist.

There is also another fire in the same area; about six miles north of Custer. That fire is five acres.

The cause of both fires is unknown at this time.
