Extra law enforcement to patrol the streets through the holiday

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) Free car rides are always nice, but not when they are in the back of a cop car because you were driving while intoxicated.

The Rapid City Police Department and Pennington County Sheriff's Office are participating in the nationwide campaign, known as "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over."

It starts tomorrow and runs through Labor Day.

In 2015, there were 875 DUI arrests and so far this year, there have been 642 and if the trend holds, this years number will exceed last years.

"This year, our numbers are back up. As far as why that's happening, we really don't know at this stage of the game. We still have two dedicated officers every night that are out there on a DUI task force and then until the 5th, we're gonna have 2 to 3 additional officers looking just for the traffic infractions, specifically the DUI's," Rapid City Police Department traffic patrol officer Fred Baxter.

Even though DUI enforcement will be the top priority, officers will also be on the lookout for speeding and seatbelt violations.
