Eric's Wine MInute - How to Hold a Wine Glass
Eric Gardner says, "TODAY A MOMENT ABOUT WINE GLASSES.
THERE'S SO MUCH TO SAY ABOUT THE PROPER WINE GLASS SHAPE, MORE ON THAT IN ANOTHER WINE MINUTE.
BUT HOW ABOUT HOW YOU HOLD THE GLASS?
The truth is you can hold a wine glass any way you like.
I BELIEVE THAT as long as you're actively tasting wine, it really doesn't matter what you do.
Despite this fact, some social situations can't be taken lightly.
Perhaps you're at a classy event or some WINE SNOB is about to snap your mug on instagram… either way, THE LAST THING YOU SHOULD BE WORRIED ABOUT IS BEING JUDGED BY HOW YOU HOLD A GLASS.
WITH THAT SAID, THE STANDARD IS TO HOLD A GLASS BY ITS STEM.
THERE'S EVEN A BOOK OR TWO OUT ON THIS - THE OFFICIAL RULE IS TO HOLD ALL STEMMED WINE GLASSES TOWAD THE BASE O THE STEM BETWEEN YOUR THUMB, FOREFINGER AND MIDDLE FINGER.
WELL, TWO REASONS: FIRST, SOCIAL APPEARANCE, NO FINGERPRINTS ON THE BOWL OF THE GLASS.
BUT PERHAPS MORE IMPORTANTLY, WITH YOUR HOT HANDS AWAY FROM THE BOWL, THE WINE STAYS COOLER, OR AT A STEADY TEMPERATURE LONGER.
BUT HERE'S ANOTHER REASON: BY HOLDING THE GLASS ON THE LOWER STEM, YOU CAN SWIRL THE WINE IN YOUR GLASS MORE EASILY.
THIS IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE BY SWIRLING, YOU'RE GETTING MORE AIR INTO THE WINE, LETTING IT OPEN UP.
THINK OF IT AS DECANTING THE WINE IN YOUR GLASS.
BUT ALL THAT ASIDE, I AM MORE INTERESTED IN YOU ENJOYING THE WINE, NOT ADHERING TO A BOOK OF RULES ABOUT HOW YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO DRINK IT.
OH, AND WHAT ABOUT THOSE STEMLESS GLASSES?
TRY TO HOLD THOSE NEAR THE BOTTOM."
