RAPID CITY,S.D. (KOTA TV) - That first snow is always exciting, but it becomes annoying when you need to scrap off your car. However, you could be fined if you don't.
An officer will pull you over if your windows or windshield are covered in snow or ice. The fine is $25.
While this may not sound like a lot, it could cost you a lot more if you don't clean off your car.
"That snow would be removed, don't want it flying off and hitting a vehicle behind you, which may cause them to avoid it and may cause an accident," said Officer Zachary Walsh of the Rapid City Police Department.
No one can prevent the snow, but someone can take extra steps to make sure their car is free of snow and ice, such as buying de-icing fluid.
You want to look for the label that says the fluid can handle temperatures below 0. But one thing you want to avoid that many people do, is leave your car idling to warm up.
"Don't do that,” said Blake Bump, Technician with Advanced Auto Repair. “It's very hard on the engine to sit there and idle when it's that cold. Two minutes idling is fine. Just enough to warm the fluids and get the transmission moving."
The RCPD says it’s better to take that extra ten minutes in the morning, and if all else fails, there is always the good ole’ scraper.
