Don't put a puppy under the Christmas tree

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) - At some point in their life, most people have asked for a pet for Christmas.

Jerry Steinley of the Humane Society of the Black Hills strongly recommends against that.

Bringing a pet into a family is a lot of work. All parties involved need to be ready to take on the daily responsibilities.

The cute puppies grow into adult dogs, and in that process there are many time consuming tasks, like house training.

An alternative that Steinley recommends is a gift card. In that case, there is still a pet related gift under the tree, and the entire family gets to take part in the decision.

Taking the time to meet the pet as a family ahead of time and understanding the temperament and expectations can save later heartbreak and frustration for everyone.
