Deadwood City budget much smaller for 2018

DEADWOOD, S.D. (KOTA TV) - As we go out with the old year and in with the new, some cities are taking a look at their budget for 2018.

Deadwood aims to take on a smaller budget than they did last year with $350,000 planned for 2018 compared to $4.5 million in 2017.

That money will be used to renovate the police department basement and expand some office spaces as well as making improvements to Gordon Park on Sherman Street.
Another project the city is taking on in the new year is the demolition of the armory building to build a new parking lot.

City planner, Robert Nelson, says this will be a year to conserve some money.

"It is time for us to catch up on some maintenance," said Nelson, "And we know we have a highway project coming up in 2019 so we felt it was best to save some money for that."

Nelson says programs like the Historic Preservation Restoration Grants were a hit in 2017 and they hope to continue the trend in the new year.
