Classmates remember the Spirit of Six

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) - There's now a third Spirit of Six memorial in Rapid City.

On Sunday, local officials and the reunion class of 1968 unveiled a new memorial to the six cheerleaders and their advisor who died in a plane crash coming home from a state basketball game 50 years ago.

With Central's expansion, some worried the original Spirit of Six memorial was tucked away in a forgotten corner of the school.

The reunion board decided to commission a new one for the activities center of Central High School. Paul Jensen says he still remembers what it was like to lose six classmates.

"There were not councilors back then and everybody had to get through this alone and so this kind of was our opportunity to close the door on a massive loss back then," Jensen said.

In all, Jensen says it took him less than two days to round up enough donates from his classmates to commission the new memorial.

There are two other memorials for the Spirit of Six. One is outside Rapid City High School. The original one is just inside the East entrance of Central High School.
