Changes to deer season passed in Pierre

PIERRE, S.D. (KOTA TV) -- Deer hunters will likely see a change next season under a new license plan approved Friday by state game officials.

The state Game, Fish and Parks Commission unanimously passed a plan that would allow hunters to apply for two of six seasons in the first of three drawings.

Earlier proposals had limited the number a hunter could apply for to a single season in the first draw. The commission's aim remains to have more hunters get their preferred tag but said the feedback from the public overwhelmingly rejected the idea of limiting first round applications to a single tag.

Hunters we spoke with welcomed the changes.

"I really like the new proposals," said Bob Nash. "I think it's going to provide a lot of people more opportunities to be in the field and hunting and getting their most preferred license."

The new regulations are not final yet. The commission will take additional public comment until its next meeting on Feb. 28.
