LEAD, S.D. ( KOTA TV) - Another city in the Black Hills now has the new CodeRED emergency alert system to alert people of emergency situations.

This month, the City of Lead launched CodeRED, a mass notification system that alerts residents of emergency situations in the affected areas.

The system sends texts, voice messages and emails to people's phones to alert them of fires, missing persons, water and gas leaks and more.

Everyone in the Lead phone book will automatically be registered for alerts.

"Of course not a lot of cell phones are in there now so you'll have to go onto the web page which will be in the City of Lead, and sign up that way,” said Lead City Administrator Mike Stahl.

The CodeRED mobile alert app is free to register and download. It works for both Android and Apple phones and you can get alerts anywhere in the country.
