DEADWOOD, S.D. (KOTA TV) - Every year Deadwood fire department holds a chili feed to remind people to check their smoke alarms, but this year was a little different.
While the fire department still gave out batteries and new smoke alarms to those who needed them, Sunday, November 4th was proclaimed Robert Nelson Senior day by the late mayor Chuck Turbiville. Nelson had volunteered with the fire department for more than 30 years and to remember his service to the community Turbiville made this last proclamation before his death.
"I was greatly honored. I was surprised to hear that that's the last proclamation that he signed. I'll cherish it forever," says Nelson.
Nelson would have loved to continue to volunteer if it weren't for his health and he encourages others to volunteer as well.
