Names released in Tuesday's train accident

EDGEMONT, S.D. (KOTA TV) - We now know the names of two men killed in Tuesday's train accident: Richard Lessert and Douglas Schmitz.

Lessert, a 35-year-old gang foreman, had 10 years of service with BNSF; and Schmitz, 58, had 39 years of service. Both employees were headquartered in Edgemont.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.

The National Transportation Safety Board has taken over the investigation into Tuesday's train accident near Edgemont that killed two BNSF workers.

The names of the workers has not been released. Both workers were headquartered at Edgemont.

Two Burlington Northern Santa Fe workers were killed this morning in a train accident, according to a company spokesperson.

"A BNSF train struck and fatally injured two BNSF employees near Edgemont. BNSF officers are responding to this tragic accident. We will release additional details as we are able," said Amy McBeth, BNSF Railway spokesperson.

The deadly accident occurred about 10:15 a.m. by the Highway 18 overpass, just north of Edgemont.
