Beautiful Friday, Cold Front Saturday Morning
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - Just about a perfect Friday on tap today across KOTA Territory with mostly sunny skies and slightly warmer than normal temperatures. Winds will be out of the north and much lighter than on Thursday. Expect highs in the 70s to mid-80s.
Clouds increase late tonight as the jet stream dips in from the north and a surface cold front begins to get a little more interesting. Rain is likely to develop along the Wyoming/Montana border after midnight and then slowly push south between the Big Horns and Black Hills. Snow levels will drop to 8,000ft in the Big Horns with flakes making it down to 6,000ft or so. Rain will struggle to push east of the Black Hills toward Rapid City, but some light stuff is possible late morning. From the hills westward, however, up to a half inch is possible with most areas coming in around a quarter.
Dryer northwest flow takes over behind the front with most of the rain/showers ending around lunchtime. We’ll scatter out to partly cloudy with gusty northwest winds for the rest of the day and highs in the 50s to low 60s.
After a cool morning, temperatures warm up on Sunday with widespread 60s to low 70s. Sunday is trending dry with perhaps only a shower possible over the hills.
Next week will feature bouts of wind on Monday and Wednesday with passing systems in the northwest flow, but not much moisture. We may see a *chance* of storms on Wednesday, but it’s not a high probability chance at the moment. Temperatures should remain a little above normal with 70s to 80s.
