Rapid City inmate found dead in cell at Pennington County Jail

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - At approximately 3:30 a.m., a correctional officer found a 44-year-old inmate hanging in his cell, during a 30-minute round.

Jail staff and paramedics performed life-saving measures, but the man did not survive.

The Division of Criminal Investigation is handling the death investigation.

The inmate’s name has not yet been released so that the family can be notified.
