RCPD responds to chaotic shots fired call at apartment complex
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - Residents of a north Rapid apartment complex woke up to the sound of gun shots after an unknown shooter fired several rounds into a dwelling.
On Thursday, Rapid City Police responded to a shots fired call at the 1700 block of N. Maple Avenue at around 5:00 a.m.
According to RCPD Cpt. James Johns, gun shots were still being fired when authorities arrived on scene, creating a “very active and chaotic scene” as people fled the area on-foot.
No injuries were reported, but a dwelling was hit with multiple bullets to the walls and windows.
Brendyn Medina, police community relations specialist, added that every working officer in the city responded to the incident.
Multiple individuals have been detained, but no definitive suspect or group of suspects have been named.
The captain describing the context of the shooting as a “neighborhood problem,” saying “I think there’s people here that know exactly what happened and we would ask them to come forward and let us know, tell us what’s going on, because this behavior is unacceptable.”
The complex is home to numerous teens between the ages of 12-18 and were among those detained by investigators.
