RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - Over the next five to 10 years, five South Dakota construction companies will have exclusive rights to bid on Ellsworth Air Force Base-related projects, an opportunity one West River business is excited for.

“Back in 2005, they were on the base closure list as a potential closure, and everybody in our area and our state fought hard to keep Ellsworth open and now seeing the B-21′s come, it’s an anchor base for our country and for the state especially,” said Chris O’Bryan, president of LaCreek Development. “To see this growth and then to have all the excitement around the B-21, the additional personnel coming in, the additional things they’re doing to build this base to be better, and then to be a part of it is definitely exciting.”

The MACC or multiple award construction contract is open to five companies, four of which come from western South Dakota, specifically Martin, Rapid City, and Eagle Butte.

The next 10 years will mean projects for everything from dirt work to carpentry.

“We go into it having an idea of the types of work we’ll be performing but nothing is set,” said O’Bryan. “It consists of everything from site work to remodeling to new construction, design-build services, going into it, we really have no idea what it’s going to entail but with the B-21′s coming in we can expect there to be a lot of work going on for those.”

This contract with Ellsworth isn’t new but every time similar projects arise small businesses have the opportunity to grow.

“It’s a great opportunity for small businesses, especially disadvantaged businesses that are HUB zone, women-owned, service-disabled/veteran-owned companies. It’s set aside for those types of companies,” said O’Bryan. “For us, it opens up a lot of doors for growth, to get larger, to go into more markets, not to be stuck in our small corner of South Dakota. "

LaCreek Development teamed up with MAC Construction out of Rapid City... the team as well as the other businesses will meet for a pre-construction conference on June 24.
