Shooting involving Custer County deputy under investigation
The Division of Criminal Investigation and Pennington County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
CUSTER, S.D. (KEVN) -A deputy with the Custer County Sheriff’s Office shot a man while responding to a 911 call in Custer Sunday night.
At 9:17 p.m. on Jan. 3, 2021, a woman called dispatched seeking help. When the deputy arrived, the woman who called led into the residence and a man holding a gun appeared, according to a press release KOTA Territory News received from Custer County Sheriff’s Office.
Both the woman and deputy told the man to drop the firearm, but he raised and pointed it at the deputy. In response, the deputy fired his duty weapon at him. The man was transported to Monument Health for injuries. The deputy was uninjured and placed on administrative leave per policy, Sheriff Marty Mechaley explained.
There is body camera footage of the matter under investigation. The Division of Criminal Investigation and Pennington County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
