Spearfish Canyon Fall Colors 2014

The weekend of Sept. 20-21 saw the fall colors in Spearfish Canyon at about 75 percent; with a lot of autumn gold, some reds and yellows. Last year, the Oct. 4 blizzard ruined the colors before they peaked. While this year will be different, you can still see damage from that storm.

Mike Modrick, Chief Meteorologist

Mike Modrick was fascinated by weather and science even as a young boy. Then in college, after exploring degrees in computer science, then communications, one class in Meteorology 101 changed his life. That early fascination turned into a career; and in 1981 he received a Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology, with a double major in speech, from Iowa State University.

Warmer air will gradually return as we move into the weekend. Enjoy it, because it is very temporary.

Remnants of a storm will bring a few rain and snow showers Sunday and Monday.

Another storm will develop next week could bring some snow our way Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. It is much too early to talk about how much snow is possible - this storm is nothing more than a computer projection at this point. We'll keep an eye on how this storm develops, but regardless of the snow potential, much colder air could move in again by Christmas Day and the day after.
