Spearfish Canyon Fall Colors 2014

The weekend of Sept. 20-21 saw the fall colors in Spearfish Canyon at about 75 percent; with a lot of autumn gold, some reds and yellows. Last year, the Oct. 4 blizzard ruined the colors before they peaked. While this year will be different, you can still see damage from that storm.

Weather Forecast

Mike Modrick, Chief Meteorologist

Mike Modrick was fascinated by weather and science even as a young boy. Then in college, after exploring degrees in computer science, then communications, one class in Meteorology 101 changed his life. That early fascination turned into a career; and in 1981 he received a Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology, with a double major in speech, from Iowa State University.

Starting a short weekend warm up today, clouds increase overnight as we could see some light snow along the North Dakota border in the morning. Flurries are not out of the question for Rapid City.

The clouds stick around for Sunday into Monday as we could be dealing with a weak system that will be bringing light snow and rain to South Dakota.

Things could even get a little windy Tuesday behind this next system.

Then all eyes turn to Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Will we have a "White Christmas" that's a good question, and it is possible as the weather models keep going back and forth on what could or could not a be a Christmas day storm.

Keep watching KOTA Territory as we will be refining our Christmas Day forecast as we get closer.
