Fall colors show up in Spearfish Canyon

Makenzi Henderson

Fall colors start to peak through the green forest.  In the next three weeks, you can see the flashy foliage.

Take a drive through Spearfish Canyon to see the golden-yellow aspen and fiery-red sumac splashing the Black Hills with color.

Leaves are just starting to turn.  With more warm, sunny days and cool, crisp nights, vivid reds, yellows and shades in between will fill the canyon.

Because of there are mostly aspen, birch and oak trees in the canyon, yellow dominates.

According to the Science Made Simple Web site, chlorophyll is the main reason the leaves turn color.  During the summer, it makes leaves green and masks other colors in the leaf.  But, when fall begins, chlorophyll dries up letting red and yellow pigments show through.
