Dick Horkey

Updated:

Dick Horkey  has been associated with KOTA Territory News for more than  35 years, joining the staff as weathercaster in 1976.

Dick started his broadcasting career in 1965, graduating from Brown Institute of Broadcasting in Minneapolis. After stints in northern Minnesota and in Colorado, he joined the army and served in Vietnam. Upon completion he moved back to Colorado for a time, before coming to the Black Hills.

One of his earliest memories of weather forecasting was a January morning in 1966 when his car wouldn't start, and after walking to work he reported  a  minus 48 degree temperature in Aitkin Minnesota where he was employed.
(A farmer called him and said his thermometer recorded a minus 52 degrees!)

Now THAT is cold!!

Married, Dick and his wife Mary have five grown children and eleven grandchildren.

The Horkeys share a passion for travel and like building sand castles on various Caribbean islands whenever possible.
