Native American artists get free lessons on selling art

Your art is valuable because you are selling a part of yourself. That was the main message at a training session for Native American artists.

First Peoples Fund is partnering with United Tribes Technical College Wednesday and Thursday to teach Native artists how to successfully sell their art. This free training helps Native Americans start or grow an arts business.

Logan Anderson, First Peoples Fund program manager, says it's important for an artist to remember their values when they are selling. "A lot of times it just becomes 'Oh do you want this? Okay here, $25.' And you get the $25 and that person is not walking away – the buyer is not walking away with getting a real understanding of the value of the piece that they just bought," said Anderson.

Mike Marshall says he attended Wednesday's session to learn how to manage his art as a business. "It's just like art; you're always trying to get ahead or improve yourself."
