Rapid City school board approves $175 million budget

The Rapid City school board unanimously passed a $175 million budget for the next school year but not before tapping into reserve funds.

Due to the potential for a drop in enrollment and a lack of additional funding, the new budget does include monies out of reserve funds.

Dr. Tim Mitchell, Rapid City school superintendent, says using reserve funds is not ideal. He says the board is continuing to look at other alternatives. "It is a budget that is expending more than what's coming in as long term revenue," said Mitchell. "That is always a concern. We need to rectify that long term."

School board members will head out on a retreat in a few weeks to work on future budgets.
