In a couple of afternoon hours Tuesday, a jury rendered a verdict of guilty in the murder trial of Matthew Tornquist.

Tornquist was on trial for the Oct. 4, 2011, murder of his mother, Catherine Tornquist. He was found guilty of first degree murder, a felony that carries a mandatory life sentence.  Tornquist was also found guilty of grand theft; which is another 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Prosecutors told jurors that the 28-year-old Tornquist murdered his mother in her Fall River County home and then hid her body.  More than 50 searches for Catherine were unsuccessful.

The trial was moved to Rapid City from Fall River County, and was prosecuted jointly by the Custer County States Attorney Office and South Dakota's Attorney General Office.
