Pennington County Commission budgets for more deputies

In an effort to reduce crime and response times, the Pennington County Sheriff wants more funding to increase staff.

Tuesday the Pennington County Commission approved a provisional budget that includes $500,000 for the Sheriff's Office.  The money will go toward adding 13 positions to the law enforcement division -- increasing staff in courthouse security, the transport and control division and adding one new civilian position.

“In the last six years, our response time has gone up 23 percent, which is fairly significant," Sheriff Kevin Thom said. "The other thing we looked at is what crime has done. If you look at the municipalities in Pennington County overall crime was up, which adds to our workload."

The commission still has to approve a final budget by September. If approved, the new funds will be available in January.
