Rapid City police chief asks community to pitch in; too many major crimes

Five major crimes have had law enforcement officers 'all hands on deck.'

The Rapid City chief of police asks for the community's help. In the past five to six weeks, KOTA Territory has seen an officer-involved shooting, a homicide, three simultaneous search warrants ending in felony arrests for drugs, an armed robbery at a cell phone store, and a hostage-rescue situation.

Karl Jeregis, Rapid City police chief, says the thing that all these crimes have in common is illegal drug use or abuse of alcohol. "If you know somebody that's engaging in violent or high risk behavior, or using illegal drugs, I would suggest that the communities and families have an obligation to report that to law enforcement," said Jeregis.

Chief Jeregis says people can anonymously text or call if they want to inform the police of a dangerous situation.
