A major runway reconstruction project took off mid June. Crews are repairing and repainting the runway between 11 p.m. and 5:30 a.m., which shuts down the area during that time. Peter Girtz, interim airport director, says two flights have been diverted because of the project. "We apologize for any inconvenience anybody's experience from it, but we want to make sure the airport is being taken care of and being safe," said Girtz. "And so that is part of the project that we do, and we'll do that until it's done."
Girtz says the airlines that fly into Rapid City were made aware of this closure.
The project will take a two-week break during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, but picks up again until Aug. 31.
