Two Wheeler Dealer, a local bike and fitness store, will close its doors in Rapid City after 40 years of serving the outdoor community. Store owner Michael Adams said the store will consolidate its merchandise and move to its other location in Spearfish by the beginning of October.
Adams attributes the store's closure to a lack of interest in high end bikes in the area, as well as competition from other Rapid City bike stores. The largest competition has been from online stores and e-commerce sites.
"Internet has definitely been a huge killer for bike shops," Adams said. "It's pretty important to spend local instead of online. Uh, a lot of bike parts are starting to become available online and we became the store for the information but not the sales."The Spearfish store will use its 6,000 square feet of storage to open an online-based store to reach customers in Wyoming, Montana and eastern South Dakota. "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em," Adams said.
