A fourth of SD superintendents are new this year

Posted: Updated:

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - A school administrators group in South Dakota says nearly a quarter of superintendents in the state's 151 school districts will be new to their positions this school year.

Rob Monson is the executive director of the School Administrators of South Dakota.

He says many of the positions will be filled by former principals and teachers with limited experience.

Monson says some superintendents may have left the state and others are retiring. The state's superintendents have had to make tough decisions to recent years as schools have been plagued by tight funding and a shortage of teachers.

Turnover is high across the country as well as superintendents nationwide have had to decide which programs and personnel to cut to accommodate shrinking budgets.
