Pennington County close to shifting headquarters

Pennington County is on track to open new administrative offices this fall.

County commissioners and others toured the three-story complex last week for an advance look at what the public will see starting in October.

Contractors are in the final stages of construction, slightly ahead of schedule.

The $16.5 million structure is adjacent to the historic courthouse area and spans one block, from Second to First streets and between St. Joseph and Kansas City streets.

County offices are running out of room in the 1922 courthouse and elsewhere. The new 110-thousand-square-foot facility provides room for growth and a one-stop service location for taxpayers..

Moving household furniture can be trying.

However, relocation planning committee members Mike Kuhl of the buildings and grounds department and chief deputy county treasurer Annette Brant say there's no comparison to the daunting task of moving the county's governmental operations.

"We're talking about 12 different departments. We have nearly 200 staff people that we are trying to relocate. And (we have) the desire to try and minimize the impact on the public," Kuhl said. "So all that comes together and that makes it complicated."

Timing is an issue on two levels. First, the move must be accomplished quickly so taxpayers can be served. Secondly, the change will happen just as the second half of yearly property taxes come due.

"I am most concerned about the (computer) connections for the state system and being up and running for the taxpayer," Brant said. "It's in October, the move is, when we are busy already with real estate (taxes). We just need to get everything up and running, to be open as status quo."

County commissioners are seeking bids on moving services and are scheduled to hire movers on August 5.

The relocation process will begin in late September. The new offices will open in phases starting in October.

The old courthouse will be renovated to accommodate the growing court system.
