PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The wife of South Dakota's first governor will be featured in a performance by a scholar in Brookings.
Joanita Kant will portray Margaret Mellette Tuesday. The performance will be broadcast on the Dakota Digital Network.
Mellette's husband, Arthur, was the last governor of the Dakota Territory and the first governor of South Dakota.
The Mellette's moved to Dakota Territory from Indiana in 1879. They built their brick home four years later in Watertown. It's now called the Mellette House.
The first South Dakota first lady served from 1889 to 1893. She outlived her husband by 42 years.
The performance begins at 7 p.m. on the South Dakota State University campus.
