It's a gimmick to get your money and possibly information about you and your family. A scammer is caught going door–to–door in one Rapid City neighborhood.

Rana Graham said she posted warning messages on her Facebook page after the young man came to her house. "A young man came to our door. He was approximately in his early age of 20s," Graham said.

Authorities said the man claimed to be selling magazines to raise money for a scholarship program. “The more magazines he sells, the more money he said he would get for his scholarship,” said Deputy Anthony White of the Pennington County Sheriff’s Department.

But his questions had nothing to do with school.

"He asked my husband questions about what he did, was it good work, did it pay well. Then he started asking questions about our family life," Graham said.

When her husband showed her the flyer the man had given him, she knew right away that something was wrong. That's when she called the police.

"I noticed straight away that it was the same situation that had taken place last summer,” Graham said. “With, I believe, Russian women that were going around house–to–house asking for information.”

The man didn't have any identification or a permit to sell magazines and was arrested on Monday after a second encounter with police.
