A South Dakota state prison inmate conned his way to a hospital where he made an unsuccessful attempt to escape Monday.

Sunday, inmate Alonzo Young was taken from the Jameson Annex of the State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls to a local hospital after claiming he had taken a substantial amount of medication. He was admitted to the hospital for evaluation.

According to a release from the state Department of Corrections, About 11:25 a.m. Monday, while using the bathroom in the hospital room, Young brandished a metal object about 8 ½ inches long, waving it at two DOC staff members. The DOC staffers wrestled the object away from the inmate. With help from the hospital security staff, Young was restrained to the hospital bed. No one was injured in the escape attempt.

Young is now back in the Jameson Annex.

Young is serving a 10-year sentence for first-degree robbery, a consecutive 12-year and six-month sentence for attempted first-degree robbery and another consecutive four-year sentence for simple assault on a law enforcement officer. All of the above convictions are from Minnehaha County.

In 2011, two convicted kidnappers killed Correctional Officer Ronald Johnson in a botched escape attempt.  Eric Robert was executed for his role in the murder.  Rodney Berget is appealing his death sentence.
