'PastPort' invites experiencing Deadwood's past

After everyone is safely buckled up in the car, what better place to sightsee than in the Black Hills? It’s long been a Great American Road Trip tradition.

Recently seeing old family movies reminded Brian Toole of his childhood visit to the Hills.

He wanted his children to have such memories, topped by celebrating the Fourth of July in the land of national landmarks. He specified Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Crazy Horse Memorial and Deadwood, a national historic landmark.

So the South Bend, Indiana family with six children met West Coast relatives here in America’s heartland.

In Deadwood, they received tickets to must-see local historic attractions.

The program is called the Deadwood PastPort.

For a family on a budget, free rides on the Deadwood Trolley were a bonus. So was the chance to win prizes, including a vacation in Deadwood.

The Deadwood PastPort cards are free. The promotion encourages visitors to experience local history at the Days of ’76 Museum, Deadwood History & Information Center, the Adams Museum, the Historic Adams House, Broken Boot Gold Mine and Mount Moriah Cemetery.

This is a self-paced tour that can take more than one day. Brian Toole says it’s worth the effort.

"It's always fun to get a new experience and have the kids ride the trolley around town. It will be something that they will remember. They'll talk about 'remember when we went out to Deadwood and rode the trolleys and all that?"

Participants completing the Deadwood PastPort circuit receive a free locally-made Chubby Chipmunk chocolate bar.

The entry deadline for the prizes, including the free vacation, is September 1.
