American flags out in force over July 4th weekend

When you think of Independence Day, you naturally think of the U.S. flag. And American flags were out in force in the Black Hills this July 4th holiday. But there is a proper way to display and care for the stars and stripes.

The American flag should always be handled respectfully and should be carefully protected so it won't be damaged. Every precaution should be taken to prevent it from becoming soiled, tattered, or torn.

American Legion lifetime member Ron Root said people should respect the flag every day, not just on holidays.

"I see flags that are torn, ripped, in disrepair and I don't believe that's right. If you have a tattered flag, turn it into the legion. They will make sure it gets properly disposed of," Root said.
