People are out and about the holiday weekend in the Black Hills. And Pennington County Sheriff's deputies are patrolling the area making sure everyone is safe.

On Saturday, Pennington County Sheriff's deputies goes went to a motorcycle  accident on Norris Peak Road. The person was conscious but ended up being transported to the hospital. Sergeant Chris Hislip says on the Fourth of July weekend deputies are out in full force making sure everyone is safe.

"We have saturation patrols focusing on fireworks safety driving under the influence, traffic offences that are unsafe for the public," Sergeant Hislip said.

And that includes the Pactola and Sheridan Lake areas. "Throughout the summer we have our Hills patrol contracting in which we supplement the Forest Service in assisting in seeking out criminal activity and safety issues and fire dangers on the Forest Service roads and campgrounds," Sergeant Hislip said.

At Jenny Gulch and Dakota Point people like to jump off the cliffs and for safety reasons alcohol is prohibited.

"Folks go to have fun and we seek to make a presence out there to deter criminal activity," Sergeant Hislip said.

On Saturday, Forest Service law enforcement issued $100 citations to people who were drinking at the cliffs at Dakota Point.

Deputies also have other concerns. "But he is also out there to look for fire issues, fire safety issues and take care of those so we can protect our Black Hills," Sergeant Hislip said.

This year on the Fourth of July, Pennington County Sheriff's deputies responded to 162 incidents that includes everything from disturbances to fireworks, last year they responded to 156. This year deputies responded to 27 fireworks calls, and last year it was 34.
